A suspicious object that sparked a security alert in west Belfast on Monday was an "elaborate hoax", police confirmed.

Around 20 families were thought to have been caught up in the disruption as their homes were evacuated in the Glenalina Gardens area following the discovery.

Army Technical Officers attended the scene and the object was removed for further examination.

It was then examined and declared an elaborate hoax.

Inspector Murphy thanked the local community "for their patience and understanding during the course of this policing operation".

“I want to appeal to anyone who can assist us with our enquiries into this incident to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 233 of 22/07/19," he said.

"Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime."
