West Belfast security alert declared a hoax after controlled explosion

A security alert in west Belfast has been declared a hoax after a controlled explosion was carried out on a suspicious object found in the area.

On Monday night the PSNI confirmed that a suspicious object had been discovered in west Belfast, leading to road closures on the Springfield Road and Lanark Way.

Councillor Brian Kingston said police on patrol had spotted the object near security gates at the Springfield Road end of Lanark Way, and Army bomb disposal experts had carried out a controlled explosion.

"It seems this was designed to cause disruption and instil fear, and I condemn those responsible. Belfast City Council have said that a small number of families have been evacuated," he said.

On Tuesday morning police confirmed that residents had been able to return to their homes.

Springfield Road and Lanark Way have now reoepned.
