'Wheelie box' boost for Newtownabbey recycling

By Linda Stewart

Newtownabbey has increased its recycling levels by almost a third thanks to the introduction of a groundbreaking new 'Wheelie Box'.

Social enterprise Bryson Recycling, which trialled the Wheelie Box at more than 4,000 households, says that if all councils adopted the new boxes, Northern Ireland has the potential to exceed EU recycling targets of 50% by 2020.

The wheelie box at the centre of the trial is considered to be one of the most significant recycling innovations in recent years and has set a benchmark for recycling targets across the UK.

Eric Randall of Bryson Recycling said: "The introduction of a smaller black bin for residual waste alongside the new Wheelie Box has increased recycling levels, is more user-friendly and provides room for a range of goods which can be recycled locally."
