Widow of war hero Sir John Gorman dies

By Staff Reporter

Lady Heather Gorman, wife of the late Sir John Gorman, has passed away in Co Down.

Lady Heather, who died peacefully in Killyleagh on Tuesday, had been living at Ringdufferin Nursing Home.

Lady Heather Gorman (nee Caruth) was the mother of Angela, Johnny, Rosanagh and the late Justin.

She was also a much-loved grandmother and great-grandmother.

Her funeral service will be held on Monday, August 7, in St John the Evangelist Parish Church, Killyleagh at 12.30pm.

Sir John was a decorated war hero, and was the Ulster Unionist Party's first Catholic Assembly member.

He died in 2014, aged 91.

The couple married in 1948. Sir John had some trouble with senior Catholic cleric Bishop Mageean when he sought permission to marry Lady Heather, a Protestant, in a Catholic church.

The bishop gave him a glass of sherry but "was adamant that no diocese in Ireland would marry us as it would create scandal among the faithful".

Undaunted, they travelled to England and married there, although Sir John's mother did not attend.

A family notice requested that instead of flowers, donations may be made instead to the Riding for the Disabled Association.
