Windsor Park is a mess, says Martin McGuinness

Northern Ireland's top football venue Windsor Park is a mess, Stormont's Deputy First Minister has said after his first visit to the ground in nearly half-a-century.

Martin McGuinness — who watched Derry City draw 1-1 with hosts Linfield on Monday night —also reiterated his desire for an all-Ireland international football team.

“I have to say it is in a very sad state. It's a mess, really, and I think everybody associated with Windsor Park realises it is a mess and it badly needs work,” he said.

The stadium is set for a £25m facelift thanks to funding from Stormont.

“Talking as a sports fan, it is my very strong view that soccer on the island would be much better served if we had an all-Ireland league and one international team,” Mr McGuinness added.
