Woman (19) dies and man (21) in serious condition in hospital after being struck by van in Toome

By Claire Williamson

A 19-year-old woman has died and a 21-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after being struck by a van near Toome.

It happened on the Moneynick Road at around 3.40am on Saturday morning.

The PSNI said the man is in a very serious condition in Antrim Area Hospital.

A spokeswoman said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have any information that could assist the police investigation to contact police in Antrim by calling 101 quoting reference 176 of 20/01/18.”

Sinn Fein MLA Philip McGuigan said the young woman is from Dunloy and the 21-year-old man is from Ballymoney.

He said the village of Dunloy had been "plunged into sadness" following the news.

"This news that we woke up to this morning in the village is heartbreaking. I know this young girl and I know her family well. I would be speaking to her father almost on a daily basis.

"She was at University and had a bright future so to have lost her life so young in these circumstances is hard to take.  All our thoughts and prayers are with her family who are obviously devastated.

“We are also thinking and praying for the young fella from Ballymoney who is injured and for his family.”

Sinn Fein south Antrim MLA Declan Kearney expressed his sympathy to the family and friends of the young woman.

He said: “I was shocked to hear of the tragic death of a young woman pedestrian on the Moneynick Road in the early hours of this morning.

“Whilst we don’t yet know all the details of what led up to this terrible tragedy, the fact that another young life has been taken on our local roads in such tragic circumstances is a sombre reminder of the importance of rural road safety.

“I want to commend the PSNI and emergency services for their efforts in the aftermath of this horrible incident.

“I also wish to extend my deepest and heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of the young woman who died as a result of this tragic accident. My thoughts are also with the young man who was injured, and who remains in a critical condition in hospital”.

SDLP councillor Brian Duffin said: "I send my deepest condolences to the family of the girl who was killed. My prayers are with them and with the family of the man who is seriously injured."

The Moneynick Road has since reopened.
