Woman (50) attacked in Derry lane

A 50-year-old woman was the victim of a "vicious" attack in Londonderry, which police are unable to establish a motive for.

She was walking in a laneway between Creggan Heights and Ballymagowan at around 8.40pm on Friday when a man approached her.

A struggle ensued and she suffered a cut to her nose.

Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey condemned those behind the "vicious and brutal attack".

“The woman was using a local laneway when she was attacked and has sustained cuts to her face and head," he said. "This was a terrifying and savage assault that has had a profound impact on the victim and her family.

“This is a laneway often used by local people, and especially children. Those behind the attack are brutal thugs who have no regard for the people they hurt nor for this community."

Police said enquiries were at an early stage and a motive had yet to be established.

They appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
