By Rebecca Black

A 59-year-old woman has been left traumatised after hijackers punched her in the face before taking her car.

The culprit later rammed a police car before making his escape.

The incident started at Norglen Parade in the Turf Lodge area of west Belfast in the early hours of Monday morning.

The woman had been taking items out of her silver Vauxhall Astra at around 4am when she was approached by a man who she did not know.

He spoke to her before suddenly punching her in the face and then stealing her car.

The woman was left bruised and in shock as the man sped off in the direction of Springfield.

She notified police about the incident before the stolen car was spotted on Stockmans Lane.

Police pursued the car and it ended up reversing into the police vehicle several times.

PSNI Detective Inspector Jenna Fitzpatrick said the car was eventually recovered abandoned in the Whiterock area.

She has appealed for any witnesses to either the hijacking or the pursuit to come forward.
