Woman, 81, dies after Belfast fire
An 81-year-old woman has died after suffering burns injuries in a fire at a sheltered housing complex in west Belfast.
The pensioner was taken to hospital after the fire broke out at Owenvale Fold on the Springfield Road at around 11pm on Tuesday.
She was initially said to have suffered critical injuries, before police confirmed she died on Wednesday afternoon. Officers said they are not treating the fire as suspicious.
Residents were led to safety inside the complex after the blaze broke out, but fire chiefs said no one had to leave the property.
In a statement, Helm Housing, which is responsible for the home, said the fire alarm activated just after 11pm.
"Staff at the Fold responded promptly and discovered a fire in a resident's room," they said.
"Members of staff were able to extinguish the fire in the room, before the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service arrived on site."
They added: "The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service are currently conducting an investigation to establish the source of the fire."
Helm Housing added: "All staff involved would like to extend their deepest sympathy to the family.
"This was a tragic loss of life and she will be sadly missed by all of Owenvale Court's staff and residents."
