Woman dies in house fire in Holywood

A woman has died following a house fire in Holywood on Wednesday.

The incident happened at a house in The Green area of the town.

Police received a report of the fire shortly before 12.15pm.

Emergency Services attended but the woman, who was said to be in her 50s, was found deceased at the scene.

An investigation into the cause of the fire has now commenced.

North Down MLA Gordon Dunne has expressed his sadness following the tragic death on Tuesday afternoon.

The DUP representative said: "I would like to express my shock and sadness at the news of the passing of this lady, who came from a highly respected and well known family in the Holywood area.

"There is a real sense of shock within the local community at the sudden death of this lady and I would like to pass on my thoughts and prayers to the family at this sad and tragic time."

The MLA added: "The close knit community within the Redburn and Loughview area will certainly rally around and support the family circle at this difficult time.

"I would like to express our thanks to all the emergency services including the Fire and Rescue Service, Air Ambulance Service and PSNI for their rapid response in attending to the scene of the tragic incident; but sadly they were unable to save the life of this lady."
