Woman driver refuses to get out of car after man 'threatens her with concealed weapon'

A woman refused to get out of her car after a would-be hijacker allegedly threatened her with a concealed weapon in Belfast city centre.

The incident happened at around 10.30pm on Thursday.

A man got into the passenger seat of a parked grey Hyundai car on Great Victoria Street and threatened the female driver with a concealed weapon.

Police say the driver opened her door and called out to passers-by for assistance before the man got out of the car and made off on foot.

A suspect was arrested a short time later at Amelia Street on suspicion of attempted hijacking, possession of an offensive weapon and threats to kill.

He remains in police custody.
