Woman held in axe murder probe

A 23-year-old woman has been arrested by detectives hunting for an axe murderer.

She was detained by serious crime branch officers investigating the death of Basil McAfee more than a year ago.

The 50-year-old, who was the victim of frenzied attack, was found dead by his mother at his home on Henderson Avenue in North Belfast on December 20, 2013.

The last public sighting of him was a day earlier in an off-licence on the nearby Cavehill Road on the afternoon of December 19.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector John McVea said the suspect had been detained in Belfast this afternoon and was being questioned at a police station in the city.

It is the sixth arrest so far in the murder investigation.

A 39-year-old man and 44-year-old woman arrested last week were released on bail pending further inquiries.

Three other men arrested at an earlier date were released unconditionally.
