By Chris McCullough

A woman hit by a car in Carrickfergus on Tuesday has died from her injuries.

The woman in her 50s has been named locally as Marcella Allen from the town.

A car knocked down Ms Allen, who is in her 50s, as she was crossing Rodgers Quay.

She was later taken to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital with serious injuries.

Police from the Larne and Carrickfergus policing teams arrived at Rodgers Quay, adjacent to the Harbour car park, within minutes.

Councillor Jim Brown knew Marcella. He said: "It's very sad indeed. Marcella was well-known and very well-respected.

"I offer my sincere condolences to her family and friends.

"This sad incident highlights again the dangers of crossing roads and more needs to be done to raise road safety awareness."

Onlookers at the scene said Rodgers Quay was a dangerous roadway to cross and appealed for a pedestrian crossing to be built near to where Ms Allen was hit by the car.

One mother with a young child said: "People cross all the time from the car park beside the castle to the Sainsbury's supermarket."

Sergeant Brian Caskey from Larne Policing Team appealed for witnesses to contact the police at Larne on the 101 number.
