Woman lucky to be alive after escaping house fire

A woman is lucky to be alive after escaping a blaze at her home yesterday.

The fire broke out at the semi-detached house in Castlerock, Co Londonderry, at 4.30pm.

The woman was believed to be in the Ballyhackett Road house by herself and managed to escape onto the roof of her porch.

Neighbours helped her to safety before calling her an ambulance.

She was taken to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine where |she was treated for the effects |of smoke inhalation.

The fire gutted the kitchen and utility rooms of the house and the rest of the property was smoke-damaged.

Coleraine Fire and Rescue |Service commander Andy Deal said he understood smoke detectors had not been fitted.

“It was very serious and could have been a lot worse,” he said. “She is very lucky to be alive.”

The cause of the blaze was being investigated last night.
