Woman of the Year 2015: Newspaper tribute to Northern Ireland heroes

By Rebecca Black

When Wendy Austin interviewed Belfast Telegraph Woman of the Year Maud Kells on stage at our gala event, the audience gasped in horror, then admiration, as the missionary relived the moment she was shot in the Congo.

The 75-year-old nurse from Cookstown, Co Tyrone, revealed how she had sat with her back pressed against a wall for 10 minutes in a bid to stem the bleeding before help eventually arrived.

As well as winning our Inspirational Woman of the Year category this week, Maud was chosen from among the nine category winners as the 2015 overall champion.

You can read more about her incredible story and the stories of all our winners and shortlisted women in our Woman of the Year 2015 supplement, free with the Belfast Telegraph next Thursday.
