Woman on child cruelty charge has baby boy

By Michael Donnelly

An Enniskillen woman facing cruelty charges linked to the death of her 15-month-old daughter Millie Martin has given birth to a boy.

The news was revealed at Omagh Crown Court sitting in Belfast yesterday when 26-year-old Rachael Martin was due to be arraigned on the charges.

Rachael Martin's former partner Barry McCarney (31), who is accused of murdering and sexually abusing baby Millie, was also due to enter his pleas yesterday. However the case was adjourned until next month when legal applications will be heard.

A lawyer told the court that there are more than 2,000 pages of interviews in the case.

Mr McCarney was not Millie’s father, but at the time of her death had been living with Ms Martin in a house at Glebe Park in Enniskillen.

He is accused of sexually assaulting 15-month-old Millie between December 8 and 11, 2009, when he then allegedly murdered her.

Ms Martin is accused of failing to protect her daughter from the unlawful act that caused her death on December 11, and wilfully neglecting her in a manner likely to cause her unnecessary suffering, between September 1, 2009 and December 12, 2009.
