Woman on crutches robbed

A woman on crutches has been robbed while walking in east Belfast in what has been described as a “despicable act”.

The thief snatched her handbag containing cash as the woman made her way along the Beersbridge Road last week. She fell but was not hurt.

It is thought the robber, described as being 5ft 7ins tall, distracted his victim by asking for a cigarette light.

The incident happened shortly after noon on Wednesday.

East Belfast DUP MLA Robin Newton said: “To target someone who is disabled, is a despicable act and says something about the thief who would wish to attack a woman unable to defend herself.

“The person responsible picked on someone who was easy prey and I would call on anyone with information to support the police in their efforts to track down these thugs.”

The thief was wearing a black hooded jumper, baseball cap and jeans.

A PSNI spokesman urged anyone with information to call them 0845 600 8000 or Crimestoppers 0800 555111.
