Woman rescued from Mourne Mountains after breaking leg

A woman has been rescued from the Mourne Mountains after breaking her leg.

Rescue services were called out shortly before 3pm on Saturday afternoon to assist an injured female walker.

The woman had been descending Slieve Bearnagh when she fell and injured herself.

A team from the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team responded along with the Belfast Coast Guard. The Rescue 116 helicopter was also called in from Dublin-based Irish Coast Guard.

The response teams located the injured woman along the Mourne wall just below the North Tor.

The casualty was assessed and treated for a leg fracture and prepared to be lifted from the mountain.

Members of the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team then stretchered the woman to a winching site next to Hares Gap.

The Rescue 116 helicopter winched the woman on board and transferred her to hospital.

A total of 14 members of the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team responded, with the rescue effort taking just under four hours and finishing up at 6.47pm on Saturday afternoon.
