Woman rescued from River Lagan

A woman has been rescued from the River Lagan in Belfast city centre.

A police officer entered the water near the Queen's Bridge with a life ring after receiving a report of a woman in distress. She was in difficulty and at risk of drowning.

The officer held the woman afloat until a fire service boat rescued them both. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital.

The incident happened close to the spot where Belfast man Joby Murphy disappeared recently.

The 20-year-old is believed to have fallen from a footbridge over the river last month after drinking alcohol at a nearby nightclub.
