Woman sexually assaulted in Belfast

A woman has been sexually assaulted in an early morning attack in Belfast.

Police have said they are investigating the serious sexual assault which happened in the Upper Newtownards Road area of Belfast close to the Holywood Arches during the early hours of Sunday morning.

They received a report that a woman in her 40s has been assaulted some time between 4am and 4.30am.

Police are appealing for anyone with information or who may have been in the area at the time to contact them.

Robin Newton, DUP MLA for East Belfast, said the attack was "very worrying" and of great concern to the public.

"This type of violent crime is deplorable and must carry the strongest possible condemnation," he said.

"Those who carry out such attacks on women are dangerous and if they get away with it they will without doubt attack another vulnerable woman."

Mr Newton urged people with information to contact police.

"The PSNI needs the help of the entire community to put behind bars the violent thug or thugs who carried out this sickening crime," he said.
