Woman suffers multiple stab wounds in horror knife attack

A young woman fled for her life after being repeatedly stabbed in a frenzied attack.

The 26-year-old suffered multiple wounds during the horrific incident at her north Belfast home on Tuesday morning.

The victim, named locally as Shauneen Dowds, was taken to hospital.

It is understood her injuries are not life-threatening.

The stabbing occurred in the Glenrosa Link area and was reported at 7am.

Police later arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the incident.

According to neighbours, the victim ran to a nearby house for help moments after being attacked.

One neighbour described how she was confronted with an appalling scene after the victim arrived at her front door, drenched in blood.

"She was covered in blood and I just looked at her and thought 'Oh my God'," she said.

"She was holding her neck and there were big cuts to her arm from where she tried to defend herself.

"There were young children awake and they saw it too. It was awful."

The neighbour said she was left feeling helpless.

"She took her hand off her neck and there was all this blood over my step," she added. "I was thinking, 'what do I do? Who's awake at this time of night to help?'.

"Someone around the corner was able to call for help.

"It was lucky we got the ambulance when we did. It could have been much worse.

"She was in a really bad state."

The victim remained in hospital last night.

SDLP councillor Pat Convery, who chairs the local Police and Community Safety Partnership, said he was shocked by the attack. "Such an attack will only bring fear to the local community," he said.

"I would urge anyone with information to ensure it is brought to the PSNI."

DUP councillor Guy Spence said the stabbing had caused alarm in the community.

"Crime has reduced in the area in recent years, particularly violent crime, so this is very concerning," he said.

"It is shocking to think this could take place."

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police are investigating an assault that occurred in the Glenrosa Link area of north Belfast on the morning of Tuesday, August 27.

"At approximately 7am, police received a report that a 26-year-old woman had received multiple stab wounds after a male entered her house.

"She was taken to hospital for treatment to her injuries.

"She is currently believed to be in a stable condition.

"A 20-year-old man was later arrested in connection with the incident and is assisting police with their inquiries."
