Woman's body found on Tyrella beach in Co Down

A woman's body has been found on Tyrella beach in Co Down.

The discovery was made by a dog walker at around 3.10pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers are at the scene.

The SDLP's South Down MP Margaret Ritchie extended her condolences to the family and friends of the woman.

Ms Ritchie said: "Today's news has brought immense shock and sadness to the local community.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with this woman’s family and friends to whom I wish to extend my deepest sympathies.

"I commend the great work of our emergency services including the Coastguard at this tragic time."

Sinn Fein MLA Chris Hazzard expressed his condolences.

"The discovery of the body of a woman on the east end of Tyrella Strand is a tragedy.

"The local community has been shocked and saddened at this discovery.

"My thoughts are with the family and friends of this woman at this sad and difficult time."

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police are in attendance at the find of a body on a beach in Newcastle at approximately 3.10pm on Tuesday 2 February.

"There are no further details at this time."
