Woman's death in Omagh now a murder inquiry

Police have launched a murder investigation after a 36-year-old woman died in hospital.

Mairead McCallion was discovered with head injuries at 11.40am on Sunday at a house in Castleview Court, Omagh.

She died in hospital on Monday.

The bungalow to where an ambulance was called, is part of a Housing Executive development situated just off the Old Mountfield Road.

It is believed Ms McCallion was not the resident, and that there may have been a house party at it earlier.

Ms McCallion was immediately taken to the nearest hospital for treatment, but succumbed to her injuries the following day.

Omagh town Sinn Fein councillor, Sorcha McAnespy, gave her condolences and sympathy to the woman's family and friends last night. She said: "A death such as this will completely rock the entire community.

"It's very shocking and upsetting to hear of this, particularly as she was around my own age and doesn't live that far from me."

Ms McCallion's funeral service is to be held at Drumragh Catholic Church in Omagh.
