Women in NI shouldn't pay for abortions: McDonnell
Shadow chancellor John McDonnell has said Labour will try to prevent women from Northern Ireland having to pay for abortions in England.
The Scottish Government is already considering providing free abortions for Northern Ireland women on the NHS.
Speaking at Glastonbury Festival's left field, Mr McDonnell said his party would also aim to provide free terminations for women from Northern Ireland, where it remains largely illegal.
He added: "I venture into Northern Ireland politics with some trepidation because of the accusations that have been made against me and Jeremy because of the role we tried to play in the peace process."
In its general election manifesto, Labour pledged to ensure a woman's right to choose a safe, legal abortion, and said it would work with MLAs "to extend that right to women in Northern Ireland".
Mr McDonnell also said Labour would not "turn away" votes from the DUP to defeat the Conservatives on austerity measures.
