Worker dies after falling from barn roof at Portadown farm
A man in his 50s who died in an accident at a farm near Portadown yesterday is understood to have been a foreign national who was building a steel-framed barn.
The man had not been named last night by police following the accident on the Co Armagh property owned by Ivan Reilly at Derrycarne Road.
Mr Reilly is well-known in the area as president of the Derryadd Apprentice Boys.
Fellow member and local DUP councillor Jonathan Buckley said last night he was planning to visit the farm and he knew Mr Reilly would be "distraught". Mr Buckley said the incident, in which a second man, also believed to be a foreign national, was injured, brought home the dangers of working on farms.
The councillor lost two uncles to farm-related accidents in 2011 and 2012 in incidents involving a tree and a crate.
Mr Buckley said: "This accident will send shockwaves through the area.
"I know the farmer Ivan Reilly well and he will be distraught.
"It is very sad circumstances and it seems to be two contractors, foreign nationals, working on a farm building and they fell. With two of my own family killed in farm accidents, I can empathise with those affected by this tragic incident.
"Once again this is another reminder of the dangers on farms and how safety must be a priority."
A neighbour on the Derrycarne Road said: "This is a real tragedy and there will be a really sad home somewhere."
Approach roads were sealed off last night by police who were investigating the incident, along with health and safety officials.
Police confirmed a man in his 50s had died and a second man was injured.
A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said: "We have been made aware of a fatality due to a serious incident during construction work in the Craigavon area and are investigating."
An Ambulance Service spokesman said it received a report at 1.25pm that two men fell off a roof. Two ambulances attended and took both men to Craigavon Area Hospital.
A Southern Trust spokesman said last night the second man was discharged from hospital.
Craigavon mayor Colin McCusker said: "I am very shocked to hear of this terrible news. My thoughts go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased and to everyone who has been impacted by this."
