Workers held in immigration raid

Two Chinese takeaway workers have been arrested in Co Londonderry in an illegal immigration probe.

The men, aged 35 and 31, were detained after Border Agency officials swooped on the Bamboo Garden Chinese takeaway in Magherafelt on Monday.

One man was detained at the fast-food outlet and the other during follow-up searches at a house in the town.

Business owner Lap Kau Tang was charged with facilitating the illegal workers and released on police bail to appear at Magherafelt Magistrates' Court on September 15.

UK Border Agency assistant director Mike Golden said: "Illegal working threatens to damage our communities - it undercuts wages and exploits vulnerable workers.

"The UK Border Agency will take action against those businesses which ignore the rules and remove those with no right to be in the UK.

"There are strict rules about which foreign nationals can get a job in the UK and businesses have a clear responsibility to carry out the right checks."
