World Superbike champ Jonathan Rea to be honoured
A second council is set to honour World Superbike champion Jonathan Rea.
In recent weeks he picked up the Belfast Telegraph Sports Star of the Year title and was handed the Freedom of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.
The Ballyclare racer, who turns 32 this weekend, was also runner-up in last year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year and was awarded an MBE.
Now, Mid and East Antrim councillors are to be asked to give the Freedom of their Borough to Rea. A Notice of Motion is due to be tabled at a meeting of the council in Ballymena on Monday.
The motion reads: 'That this council confers the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Mid and East Antrim on Dr J Rea, MBE, in recognition of his success in World Superbike competition, including a record breaking fourth successive title in a row, and to the sport of motorcycling internationally."
It is expected that the motion will receive unanimous support.
