Parents are being urged to warn their children about the dangers of playing at the former Maxwell quarry in Coleraine.

It comes after youngsters were pictured sitting on the edge of the quarry at a height.

The DUP's Philip Anderson said he had noticed an increase in the number of youths at the site and raised concerns over the potential for injury.

He said he had contacted the PSNI over the issue.

He said: "Over the last number of days I have noticed an increase in the number of youths entering the former quarry site from the back of Harpurs Hill.

"It is a very dangerous environment.

"The youths are putting their lives at risk playing there.

"I am very concerned that these youths are exposing themselves to risk of serious injury.

"I am asking parents to sit down and talk to their children to make them aware of the dangers and also to take the time to make sure you know where your children are and that, ultimately, they are safe.

"I have been in contact with police and the owners of the site regarding security."
