Youth worker sent to jail for grooming girls

A former youth leader who groomed a schoolgirl he first met in a youth club while on bail for grooming another youngster has been jailed for four years.

Antrim Crown Court Judge Corinne Philpott QC told 22-year-old Simon Jamieson he had taken advantage of his young victims who were too young to consent and really understand what was being asked of them.

Judge Philpott told the Co Antrim man that she had to ensure that young women who were little more than children were not put at risk.

“A girl of that age cannot consent and does not know the significance in real terms of what you ask her to do” she said.

Earlier Judge Philpott told Jamieson, who was 19 at the time, that the court found it had to believe his claims he “did not know their ages”. However, she added: “But even if you did not know their precise ages, you knew they were under 16.”

Jamieson was ordered to serve a year in custody to be followed, on recommendation of the Probation Service, by three years of supervised licensed parole.
