'End of an era' as UUP stalwart Alexander Samuel Hunter dies at 93

By Staff Reporter

The death has taken place of former Ulster Unionist councillor Alexander Samuel Hunter in his 94th year.

Known as Sandy, Mr Hunter had served as Larne Deputy Mayor a number of times in the 1980s.

He was the president of the party's Larne branch, a former councillor for Larne Lough and lifelong UUP member.

Mr Hunter was the husband of the late Gladys, and father of Jane, Alexander and Laura. He was also a grandfather and great-grandfather.

His funeral service will be held in Raloo Presbyterian Church, where Mr Hunter had been an elder, tomorrow at 1pm, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.

The Raloo man was also well known in farming circles and Ulster Unionist councillor Andy Wilson described him as "a real countryman".

"Everyone in Larne would have known Sandy - he was very well-liked and respected," he said.

"It's the end of an era."
