Omagh school bus crash raises gritting fear

Concerns over road safety have been raised after a bus carrying 60 schoolchildren crashed into a field in Omagh this week.

While no-one was injured in the Drumlegagh Road South accident, many have voiced their anger and worry that infrequent gritting of the road in icy weather makes the road dangerous.

Omagh District Council Chairman Patrick McGowan said: “It is an atrocious road. It was a bone of contention when I drove and it never got the proper attention”

A spokesman from the Department for Regional Development said: “This road is not gritted as part of the schedule of gritted routes as it fails to reach the threshold of 1,500 vehicles per day.”
