Orde wins huge libel payout
Sir Hugh Orde is to receive substantial libel damages over false newspaper allegations that he spent public money on flying his son to the United States.
The settlement of the action brought by the former Chief Constable over an article in the Sunday World is believed to be one of the biggest of its kind ever reached in Northern Ireland.
As well as agreeing to pay out the undisclosed sum, lawyers for the paper's publishers also issued an apology at the High Court in Belfast yesterday.
Sir Hugh sued over a May 2007 story that erroneously claimed he used PSNI funds to take his son with him to attend St Patrick's Day functions in Washington. His lawyers confirmed all aspects of the case have now been settled.
