20,000-plus street lights not working

By Noel McAdam

Around 600 street lights across Northern Ireland are being repaired every day - and some 3,000 lights which had gone out in recent months have now been fixed, Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy told the Assembly.

But there is still a backlog of approximately 20,000 lights in need of repair, Stormont MLAs heard.

And the Ulster Unionist minister gave a thinly-veiled warning against the 'lights out' nightmare being repeated in the next financial year.

Asked by the DUP if he has revamped his department - so that street lighting does not depend on unused cash being redistributed from other departments - he insisted: "I will take no lectures in managing budgets.

"The records will show that I did bid for resources to cover this shortfall," he insisted.
