Alex Salmond and Alistair Darling set for TV debate

By Karrie Gillett

The first head-to-head television debate between Scottish First Minister and former Chancellor Alistair Darling on Scottish independence has been confirmed.

Alex Salmond and the Better Together leader will face each other in the showdown being broadcast live on STV on August 5.

STV's political editor Bernard Ponsonby will host the two-hour debate in front of an audience of 350 members at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.

Mr Salmond has repeatedly insisted he should debate with David Cameron over Scotland's future in the UK ahead of September's independence referendum, although the Prime Minister has consistently refused to do so.

Last month a clash between the rival campaigns broke out over the timing of the debate before they came to an agreement.
