Defeated Ian McCrea blames loss on 'campaign of lies'

By Noel McAdam

Defeated DUP candidate Ian McCrea has claimed there was a "campaign of misinformation" against him in Mid Ulster.

Mr McCrea, son of former MP Rev William McCrea, said false claims had been spread that party leader Arlene Foster preferred his running mate, Keith Buchanan over him.

He wrote on Facebook: "Many understand that from the beginning of this election a campaign of misinformation was fed to the Press.

"I wish the electorate to know that the statement, of course from a hidden source, that I was deselected in Mid Ulster was totally untrue.

"Also those on the doors that told the people of Mid Ulster that Keith was Arlene Foster's choice and not me were deliberately speaking untruths. I fought a clean, honourable campaign and can return to the electorate holding my head up high."

Mr McCrea insisted his defeat was not the end of the family dynasty. "Those who have suggested the McCrea era has come to an end will be disappointed and in for quite a surprise," he wrote.
