A DUP politician has left Sinn Fein councillors stunned after he spoke in Irish.
Speaking at a meeting of Belfast City Council last night, Councillor Gavin Robinson had been wondering how to address the city's deputy Lord Mayor, Alliance's Maire Hendron, who was chairing the session.
"I'll say thank you deputy Lord Mayor in the Lord Mayor's chair ... because there seems to be some confusion over how to refer to you this evening," he told the council.
Sinn Fein councillor Jim McVeigh advised: "Leas Ard Mhéara". Mr Robinson then used the phrase himself - to surprise from the Sinn Fein benches.
It comes after his party colleague Gregory Campbell insulted MLAs who use Irish in the Assembly.
