A second Tory heavy hitter came to bang the election drum for Conservative and Unionist candidate Jim Nicholson yesterday.
Just five days after Opposition leader David Cameron visited Portadown and Ballymena one of his predecessors, William Hague, attended the party’s manifesto launch.
Mr Nicholson said: “No-one should underestimate the significance of these visits. It proves that the Conservative Party is 100% committed to Northern Ireland.
“And these visits also serve to underwrite David Cameron's promise that he was not neutral on the Union.”
Mr Hague, in turn, stressed Mr Nicholson would be an integral part of a national team and welcomed the rebuilding of bridges between the Ulster Unionist Party and the Conservative Party.
“No other candidate has the support of the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. No other candidate has the full force of a UK-wide party behind him. No other candidate can offer the electorate the political reality of a direct Northern Ireland input into Downing Street policy,” added Mr Nicholson.
“The Conservatives and Unionists are offering real change to politics here. We saw it last week when the DUP rolled over on double-jobbing in response to the Belfast Telegraph’s article from David Cameron. If that's the influence he can have as leader of the Opposition, imagine the influence he will have as Prime Minister!”
