Lib Dems want Trident review
Former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell has called for Trident nuclear weapons to be included in the review of Britain's defence capabilities.
A £20bn replacement for the UK's nuclear deterrent was excluded from the ongoing strategic defence and security review, but Sir Menzies said recent declarations that it would be funded entirely from the MoD's budget mean it is now “de facto” under consideration.
In a letter to Defence Secretary Liam Fox, he said: “Is it not now time to reconsider the whole approach to Trident, to include it formally in the defence review and to ensure that this element of our defence receives the scrutiny which strategic, political and financial circumstances demand?”
The coalition agreement between the Tories and Lib Dems committed the Government to renewing Trident, but agreed that it should be scrutinised to ensure it offers value for money.
The deal allows the Lib Dems — who opposed a like-for-like replacement of the system in the General Election — to “continue to make the case for alternatives”.
