MLA calls for action on fuel poverty

Foyle MLA Colum Eastwood has backed a petition launched this week by the Fuel Poverty Coalition calling for a commitment from the Executive to set out clear targets for the eradication of the problem.

The petition calls for the inclusion in the Programme for Government of a target for a detailed and costed action plan to rid the province of fuel poverty, and to implement measures immediately to alleviate the hardship of families and individuals who currently find themselves in fuel poverty. Mr Eastwood is a member of the Fuel Poverty Coalition.

The SDLP spokesman for the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister said: “Recent measures announced by the Executive to provide a one-off payment to help the plight of those suffering from fuel poverty are very much welcomed. Hopefully these payments will reach those most vulnerable and in need.

“This should, however, only be deemed as a first step.

“More is needed — 44% of all households in the North, at some point, experience the effects of fuel poverty.”
