Parades body little Hitlers, says MLA Jim Allister

Hardline unionist Jim Allister has described the Parades Commission as “little Hitlers” after the body placed restrictions on a contentious loyalist parade in north Antrim.

The TUV leader accused the commission of trying to “humiliate the Protestant community in Rasharkin” after it ruled that only 25 bands could take part in the Ballymaconnolly parade in Rasharkin this Friday.

On his Twitter account, Mr Allister wrote: “Little Hitlers on Parades Commission issue shameful Diktat to restrict number of bands in Rasharkin parade.”

“If it is an attempt to reduce the numbers attending the parade, then I call on the public to give their answer by attending in greater numbers than ever before,” added Mr Allister.

Sinn Fein Assembly Member Daithi McKay welcomed the restrictions as “a step in the right direction”.

“This parade has caused significant damage to community relations in this area and it will again cause significant disruption in the village this Friday night,” he said.
