Reg Empey calls for more democracy in Lords
Northern Ireland’s newest peer Sir Reg Empey wants to see a more democratic House of Lords, he said yesterday.
The former Ulster Unionist leader said he was entering the Upper House at a time when it is facing the most radical change in its history.
“It is obvious that the Deputy Prime Minister (Nick Clegg) wants to move towards a significantly higher proportion of elected members and I would be supportive of that,” he added.
As the Belfast Telegraph revealed yesterday, Sir Reg was included in the first new list of Lords since the formation of the coalition Conservative/Liberal Democrat Government.
But the ex-Executive minister was only finally notified about his appointment 24 hours earlier and said he hoped to be a “strong pro-Union voice for Northern Ireland” in the Lords.
He has not yet decided on his full title.
