Sinn Fein MP Brady to travel to South America to oversee elections as international observer

Sinn Fein MP Mickey Brady is to travel to South America to oversee the Venezuelan elections.

The Newry and Armagh representative will be in the country as an international observer for the July 30 Constitutional Assembly elections.

Before leaving this week, Brady said it was important the election was conducted in the correct manner in the current Venezuelan political climate.

There has been a wave of anti-government protests and dozens of people have been killed in protest-related violence since April

"I am eager to ensure there remains international confidence in what is a crucial election for the Venezuelan people," said Brady.

"The electorate has an opportunity to decide who sits in their Constitutional Assembly in a free and fair election.

"As observers our role is to ensure that only the people of Venezuela determine the future direction of their country.”
