Stormont Diary: Sammy Wilson unimpressed by Assembly's 'Strictly' performances
Sammy Wilson proved a tough judge as an unlikely Assembly couple took to the floor last Monday.
After the SDLP's Albann Maginness and Sinn Fein's Pat Doherty quick stepped over the fundamentals of a DUP motion, the Finance Minister delivered a verdict that would have made Craig Revel Horwood blanch.
"We have had our own version of Strictly Come Dancing to see who can dance on the head of a constitutional pin," he declared.
"I must say that some of the performances have not even been as elegant as Ann Widdecombe's."
Never slow to his feet, Barry McElduff spotted his chance to step in and strike up his own beat.
"Will the Member give way?" the Sinn Fein man enquired mischievously.
"I hope that the Member is not going to talk to me about Irish dancing," Mr Wilson replied, eyeing the twinkle-toed MLA suspiciously.
The West Tyrone waltzer glided on undeterred: "Will the Member join me in congratulating Stevie McDonnell and Michelle Rafferty on winning Armagh's Strictly Come Dancing competition, which Conor Murphy and I judged?"
Sammy shook his head in exasperation: "I should have known it would be a relevant intervention."
