Stormont Returns: Teenagers banned from Assembly chamber over T-shirt slogan

By Allan Preston

Budding politicians were censored at Stormont yesterday as 200 young people filled the Assembly chamber.

The Northern Ireland Youth Congress arrived for its second sitting on the Hill, with many wearing T-shirts with the slogan 'Stormont Returns'.

However, any shirt with the slogan was banned from the chamber by officials.

An Assembly spokesperson later explained: "All visitors to Parliament Buildings are expected to comply with the Assembly's conduct and behaviour of visitors in Parliament Buildings policy."

Yesterday young people discussed a range of topics including mental health, education and social media.

Elections for a Youth Assembly are expected to take place later this year. Chris Quinn, who is the director of the Northern Ireland Youth Forum, said that members were fed up waiting for our politicians to approve a Youth Assembly.

He called on the Speaker to allow more youth debates in Parliament Buildings in the future.
