Ulster Unionist Party fined over inaccurate financial records

The Ulster Unionist Party has been fined over inaccurate financial records.

The party was hit with a £3,000 fine after its spending return for the May 2016 Assembly election was found to be inaccurate.

It has paid the fine.

The Electoral Commission found the party's return failed to include payments to the value of £12,000 which should have been included. The commission noted that the party commissioned its auditors to review the party’s processes following the identification of the omissions.

The party has confirmed it will be acting on the resulting recommendations.

An Ulster Unionist Party spokesman said the party have fully cooperated with the commission treating its investigation with the "utmost seriousness".

“We deeply regret that these incidents occurred in the first place and undertook a major internal audit resulting in comprehensive specific actions to prevent a recurrence in future," he said.

"We will review our processes on an ongoing basis.

“We fully accept the Electoral Commission`s findings and have paid the resulting fine in full.”
