Presbyterian Moderator’s election set for tomorrow

Representatives of the 19 Presbyteries in Ireland will meet once again tomorrow to elect a new Moderator in succession to the Rt Revd Dr Stafford Carson.

He will leave office in June, on the first night of the General Assembly.

This will be the second election for Moderator this year, following a tie between two of the six candidates who stood last month.

Tomorrow's election will be a straight contest between the Reverend Norman Hamilton of Ballysillan and the Reverend Norman McAuley of Greenwell Street, Newtownards.

Each received five votes in February, and the other nine votes were divided between three candidates. One other nominee did not receive any votes.

The outcome of tomorrow's election will most likely be decided by the votes of the nine Presbyteries who did not vote for either of tomorrow's candidates last time. The result should be known tomorrow evening.
