Questioning continues in child sex abuse probe

Police were last night continuing to question one man in connection with an ongoing probe into historical sexual abuse in the south Down area.

Six men in total were arrested yesterday as part of the investigation being run by the PSNI’s Public Protection Unit.

Five were released last night.

Three men were released on bail pending further enquiries.

Another two were released pending reports.

Detectives had arrested three men in relation to specific allegations of child sexual abuse.

A fourth was arrested over allegations of indecent assault and suspicion of possessing indecent images of children.

A fifth man was also detained on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children and a sixth man was arrested for assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a child.

All six were arrested in the Co Down area yesterday.

Detectives from the specialist police team have spent three months investigating the claims of a number of alleged victims who came forward in February.

A total of 13 people have been arrested in the PSNI investigation so far.
