Record nine under shows McIlroy is in hot form at The Open
Rory McIlroy’s feat yesterday means that he and England's Paul Broadhurst are the only players to shoot rounds of nine under in The Open, and the youngster also now has the lowest opening round in Open history. Broadhurst also shot his record score at St Andrews back in 1990.
He’s the eighth player to shoot 63 at the Open and the first since Nick Faldo and Payne Stewart at Royal St George’s in 1993. The 21-year-old played down his feat, saying he shot better when he was 16 and went round Royal Portrush in 61 shots at the North of Ireland Amateur Open.
The low scoring at the Open continued all day with South African Louis Oosthuizen coming in at 7 under, just two behind McIlroy.
American John Daly won the open in 1995 with a score of six under at 66. He went on to equal that yesterday.
Tiger Woods is also lurking behind McIlroy at five under and is looking for his third win in three appearances at St Andrews.
