Almost two dozen people have been arrested so far over a water charges demonstration during which Tanaiste Joan Burton was trapped in her car for over two hours, activists have said.

Protesters will mount a "major" rally this Saturday in central Dublin against the ongoing arrests and what they claim is political policing.

Socialist Party TD Paul Murphy, among the most high-profile demonstrators to have been detained in connection with last November's demonstration in Jobstown, near Tallaght, south Dublin, said the issue was now about the right to protest.

"This is not just about Tallaght, it's not just about Jobstown, it's about the right of people everywhere to protest, and have the kind of protests that happened in the past with no arrests, no charges, nothing like that happening," he said.

Activists opposed to the introduction of water charges said 23 people have been arrested and questioned on suspicion of alleged offences including assault and false imprisonment over recent weeks in relation to the Jobstown demonstration.

None has been charged with any wrongdoing to date.

Hundreds have already turned out for protests against the arrests at Tallaght Garda station and at the Department for Justice.

A demonstration on Saturday will gather at the Central Bank on Dame Street at 2pm.

The Government has denied any political interference in the Garda investigation into last November's demonstration.
