30,000 Irish apply to become British citizens

Number of people born in Britain and applying for Irish passports has risen sharply

Almost 30,000 residents of the Republic of Ireland have applied to become British citizens over the past three years.

A total of 27,361 applications for British passports were received at the British Embassy in Dublin.

That means that a body of Irish people equivalent of the population of Ballymena applied for UK status.

The British passports were issued through the Passport Section of the British Embassy in the Irish capital during the period from between 2009 and 2011.
